The Real Cost of Cheap Tape: A Per-Metre Breakdown

Every tape buying decision in India gets made the same way — compare the price on two rolls, pick the cheaper one. This is the single most common mistake in tape purchasing, because roll price and actual cost are two completely different numbers. Here's the maths, laid out completely, across every common BOPP length.  

Why Per-Roll Price Is the Wrong Comparison

A 180 pack and a 280 pack of "6 rolls of BOPP tape" sound directly comparable. They're not, unless both packs contain the same length and thickness of tape per roll. Almost always, they don't - and the moment you divide price by actual metres of usable tape, the comparison changes entirely.  

65 Metre Rolls

• Market tape:  roughly 80-90 metres per roll at 36-38 micron, 6 rolls for approximately ₹300-320 → 480-540 metres total → ₹0.56-0.59 per metre

• FK Tapes: 100 metres per roll at 40 micron, 6 rolls for ₹400 → 600 metres total → ₹0.67 per metre

• Difference: 100 metres per roll at 40 micron, 6 rolls for ₹400 → 600 metres total → ₹0.67 per metre

100 Metre Rolls

• Market equivalent: roughly 80-90 metres per roll at 36-38 micron, 6 rolls for approximately ₹300-320 → 480-540 metres total → ₹0.56-0.59 per metre

• FK Tapes: 100 metres per roll at 40 micron, 6 rolls for ₹400 → 600 metres total → ₹0.67 per metre

• Difference: roughly ₹0.08-0.10 per metre — the gap narrows meaningfully at this length..  

225 Metre Rolls

• Market equivalent: roughly 200 metres per roll at 36-38 micron, 6 rolls for approximately ₹700-750 → 1200 metres total → ₹0.58-0.63 per metre

• FK Tapes: 225 metres per roll at 40 micron, 6 rolls for ₹900 → 1350 metres total → ₹0.67 per metre

• Difference: roughly ₹0.04-0.09 per metre — at this length, the per-metre cost is nearly identical between cheap tape and FK Tapes, while FK Tapes remains 11% thicker throughout.

What This Means in Practice

If you're a business going through 500 metres of tape a week, the difference between market tape and FK Tapes on the 65-metre size works out to roughly ₹70-85 extra per week, or somewhere around 3,600-4,400 per year. That's the entire cost of the "premium" - less than the cost of a single reshipped order after one failed seal in summer heat.  

At the 225-metre length specifically, that gap shrinks to a level where the price argument for cheap tape barely exists at all, while the durability argument for FK Tapes remains exactly the same.  

The Thickness Question Nobody Prices In

Micron thickness doesn't show up on a price comparison, but it's doing real work. An 11% thicker film has meaningfully more material to resist puncture, seam tearing, and heat-related adhesive softening. This is the difference between a seal that holds through a Mumbai summer and one that doesn't - and it's not captured anywhere in a simple per-roll price comparison.  

The Honest Recommendation

If your volume is genuinely low and price sensitivity is the primary driver, the per-metre gap on smaller roll sizes is real and worth acknowledging.  

If you're ordering in any real volume — which is where the 225-metre rolls make sense — the price argument for cheap tape essentially disappears, and the only remaining question is whether you want tape that's actually built for the conditions it's being asked to survive.
