The Printer's Guide to PlateMounting Tape

A blurry impression, a plate that shifts mid-run, a job that has to be stopped and the cylinder cleaned — in flexographic and offset printing, the mounting tape is doing far more work than most operators give it credit for, and getting the grade wrong shows up directly in print quality.  

Why Plate Mounting Tape Isn't Just "Sticky Tape"

The tape holding your printing plate to the cylinder or carrier isn't just there to keep the plate from falling off. Its thickness and cushioning properties directly influence impression pressure, print consistency, and how cleanly fine detail and line work reproduce. Get the grade wrong, and the print quality problem looks like a plate issue or a press issue when it's actually the tape underneath.  

Hotmelt vs Solvent: The Choice That Matters Most

• D/S Tissue Hotmelt - high initial tack, fast to apply, ideal for general plate mounting and light assembly work where production speed matters and the mounting doesn't face extreme conditions.  

• D/S Tissue Solvent - builds strength more gradually but achieves a stronger final bond, and critically, bonds to surfaces hotmelt adhesive struggles with. If plates are lifting at the edges mid-run, or the carrier material is a smooth or treated surface, solvent grade is almost always the fix.  

Most printers default to whichever grade their supplier happened to stock first, without ever being told there's a choice and without realising a mounting problem they've been treating as a plate defect might simply be the wrong adhesive for their specific setup.  

Foam Thickness and Print Quality

For flexographic plate mounting specifically, foam cushioning affects impression quality directly. Foam that's too soft won't hold fine detail and line work with precision - the plate gives too much under pressure. Foam that's too firm doesn't achieve consistent contact across the full plate surface, particularly on plates with slight surface irregularities.  

Getting this balance right is what separates consistent, sharp impressions across a full run from a job that starts sharp and degrades halfway through.  

Diagnosing Blurry or Inconsistent Impressions

If print quality is degrading across a run, work through this before assuming it's a plate or press problem:

• Is the mounting tape the correct thickness for this plate and cylinder combination? Too thin, and the plate doesn't get full contact. Too thick, and impression pressure becomes inconsistent.  

• Is the tape hotmelt when the application genuinely needs solvent? Edge lifting mid-run is the clearest sign of this.  

• Was the mounting surface clean before the tape was applied? Dust or residue between the tape and the cylinder creates the same tunnelling and uneven contact problems as any other double-sided tape application.  

The Splicing Connection

Beyond plate mounting, double-sided tape plays a second critical role in printing and paper operations — splicing, the process of joining paper webs during roll changes to keep production running without a full stop. This uses a different tape profile than plate mounting, but the same underlying principle applies: the tape needs to build tack fast enough for a "flying splice" while still holding permanently once the roll is running.  

Using the wrong grade here shows up as splice failures rather than print quality issues, but the diagnostic process is similar — check tack speed and adhesive type before assuming the fault is somewhere else in the process.  

What to Tell Your Supplier

The single most useful thing you can communicate when ordering plate mounting tape: what plate material, what cylinder or carrier surface, and what kind of detail work — fine line versus solid coverage. This is exactly what determines hotmelt versus solvent and what foam thickness you actually need, rather than defaulting to whatever's in stock.
