Monsoon-Proofing Your Packaging: What Changes When It Rains

Every year, the same complaints start arriving in June - boxes arriving with lifted tape, moisture getting under seals, packages that looked fine at dispatch and arrived compromised. Almost none of this is about the product inside. It's about using dry-season tape logic during monsoon conditions.
Why Standard BOPP Struggles in Monsoon
Standard BOPP tape performs well in stable, dry conditions. Monsoon introduces two variables it wasn't specifically built for: sustained high humidity, and direct water exposure during transit, loading, or last-mile delivery in the rain. The adhesive itself is moisture-resistant to a point, but the edges of a seal - where two pieces of tape overlap, or where the tape meets an already-damp cardboard surface — are where moisture typically finds its way in.
The Product Built for This: LDPE Tape
LDPE tape's biggest advantage over BOPP during monsoon isn't strength - it's flexibility. With significantly higher elongation than BOPP, LDPE tape conforms tightly around irregular shapes and curved surfaces rather than sealing rigidly flat. This matters because a rigid seal on a slightly uneven or already-damp surface leaves microscopic gaps; a conformable seal presses into those gaps and closes them.
LDPE is also a genuine moisture barrier by nature of the film itself, not just the adhesive — making it the better choice for anything with real water exposure risk during monsoon months, including outdoor storage, open-vehicle transport, or last-mile delivery in active rain.
Storage Changes That Matter More in Monsoon
Tape itself is sensitive to humidity during storage, not just during application. Rolls stored in a damp godown or exposed to fluctuating humidity can lose adhesive performance before they're even used. The standard guidance - dry, cool, sheltered storage away from direct sunlight — matters more during monsoon months specifically because ambient humidity is working against you even before the tape reaches a customer's box.
What Actually Changes in Your Process
For outdoor or exposed transit: switch from standard BOPP to LDPE tape for anything genuinely likely to face water contact during the journey — open trucks, last-mile delivery on two-wheelers during active rain, outdoor loading docks.
For warehouse storage during monsoon: double-check that your tape stock itself isn't sitting in a corner exposed to leaks, condensation, or humidity swings. A roll that's been compromised in storage will underperform even if it's the correct product for the job.
For carton sealing generally: consider slightly firmer application pressure during humid months - humidity makes surfaces marginally harder to achieve full contact on, and a firmer press compensates for that.
When BOPP Is Still Fine
Not every application needs to switch products for monsoon. Indoor-to- indoor shipments with minimal exposure risk, or short local deliveries with covered transport, are generally fine on standard BOPP as long as the tape itself has been stored correctly. The switch to LDPE matters most when there's genuine, direct exposure risk during the journey — not as a blanket monsoon rule for every shipment.
The FK Tapes Way
If you're seeing more sealing complaints during monsoon months than the rest of the year, it's worth checking whether the issue is the tape choice, the storage conditions, or both — rather than assuming it's simply "monsoon being monsoon."
